EWG's Jane Houlihan briefing on Mercury in Seafood demonstrates that women complying with FDA's dietary guidelines for fish consumption during pregnancy will ingest unsafe amounts of mercury when they select fish with elevated mercury levels, like albacore tuna. EWG recommends that FDA increase its testing of seafood; issue an advisory that tells women what fish are safe to eat in quantities that meet omega-3 requirements; and add canned albacore tuna to the list of fish that pregnant women avoid.
