EWG applauds bill to create new food safety agency

WASHINGTON – Today Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) introduced the Food Safety Administration Act of 2022, which would create a new independent federal agency focused on food safety, including inspections, outbreak response and research.

The following is a statement by Scott Faber, senior vice president for government affairs for the Environmental Working Group:

EWG applauds Sen. Durbin and Rep. DeLauro for making the safety of our food a priority. Every year, thousands of Americans die from foodborne illness, thousands more are hospitalized, and millions get sick.

Many of these illnesses are preventable, but only if we decide to make it a priority to inspect food manufacturing facilities, quickly respond to outbreaks, and stop letting chemical companies decide whether the chemicals added to our food are safe.

To do so, we must have a federal food safety leader who is laser-focused on our food supply, and that is what this important legislation would create.
